An acronym frequently used in leadership and management circles is “VUCA,” which stands for situations that are Volatile, Uncertain, Complex, and Ambiguous. With the coronavirus pandemic, and the recent wave of killings of African Americans that have highlighted the ongoing racial injustices in our society, we are not only living in a time of VUCA but also one of collective and tremendous suffering and pain. In a time of extraordinary change such as this, leaders are being asked to reevaluate nearly all aspects of their organizations, understanding that the “old ways” of operating may no longer be effective. In this context leaders must have the skills and tools that foster the “outer work” of leadership (what leaders actually do) as well as the “inner resources” that serve to facilitate and support this work.

The purpose of this workshop is to equip leaders with tools that facilitate both the outer and inner work of leadership. The workshop will integrate the practice of mindfulness meditation with an introduction to one of the best-known and extensively studied approaches to leadership development, known as The Five Practices of Exemplary Leadership®. This evidence-based approach helps leaders connect with and lead from their core values, serve as role models for others, craft a compelling vision for the future in the context of uncertainty, empower and be supportive and inclusive of others, foster creative solutions, and celebrate successes along the journey of change. The practice of mindfulness meditation assists leaders by fostering the ability to: focus attention despite competing demands, become more resilient in the face of setbacks and failures, recognize and effectively manage often strong emotions, and show empathy and compassion toward others.

Participants in this workshop will have the opportunity to reflect on where they are concerning each of the five exemplary leadership practices and how they can apply those practices to their real-life challenges and goals. Instruction in mindful meditation will be integrated with interactive leadership exercises, discussions, and Zoom-based breakouts throughout the day. This workshop is designed for both emerging and established leaders, and those who aspire to make a positive difference for people and organizations.
