“Self-transformation is meaningful only if it allows us to be of greater service to others.” -Matthieu Ricard
As society becomes more and more polarized, it has become increasingly difficult to listen to one another. Many of us are at a loss about how to communicate mindfully and compassionately. This can take a toll on our relationships with our friends, family, work colleagues, and our communities and ultimately impact our connection with ourselves. Research has shown practicing mindfulness can reduce personal anxiety and stress. However, most mindfulness practices are done alone which does not help to address the communication challenges we face in our relationships. New research shows that practicing specific mindfulness skills while interacting with others can foster effective communication which is the foundation for healthy functioning of close relationships.
In this retreat, we will explore and learn the practices that are the basis for interpersonal mindfulness. Interpersonal mindfulness refers to the sacred practice of deep listening and speaking with authenticity and compassion with others. By using principles from MBSR, Insight Dialogue, Non-violent communication, participants will learn these vital interpersonal skills that can be utilized directly in our most important relationships.
This retreat will teach participants how to:
Listen to others with interest, curiosity, nonjudgmental awareness, and kindness which is sometimes called beginner’s mind.
Learn how to hold space and presence for others
Accept what the other person is saying or doing, even if it is difficult to hear.
Develop the capacity to guide the interpersonal process skillfully.
Be open to the outcome, to whatever will arise, and to new possibilities.
Create the intention to serve rather than fix.
Through the practices of mindfulness meditation, loving awareness practices, psychological inquiry, dyads, group work, journaling, and body-based practices, participants will learn the essentials practices that support interpersonal mindfulness.
